Buying Guide: Key Considerations For Wide-Format MFPs
- Print width and media support: Wide-format models vary from 18″ to 44″. Confirm supported media types (rolls, cut sheets), weights, and compatibility with the media you routinely use for posters, blueprints, or signage.
- Print quality and resolution: Look for printers with high-resolution capabilities (dots per inch) and robust color management for posters and graphics. For monochrome work, ensure fast, clean text and sharp line drawings.
- Ink and toner strategy: Wide-format devices may use pigment inks for durability or dye inks for vivid color. Consider ink costs per square foot and whether the printer uses separate color channels for efficiency.
- Workflow and connectivity: USB, Ethernet, and modern wireless options are essential. Some models support mobile printing, cloud queues, and direct USB input for quick job submission.
- Automation features: A large-capacity paper feeder, automatic document feeder (ADF), and duplex printing save time on multi-page tasks and maps or plans.
- Software ecosystem: Look for drivers and software that integrate with common design tools (CAD, GIS, vector editors) and provide color calibration options to maintain consistency across outputs.
- Reliability and service: For business use, a model with a solid warranty, accessible support, and readily available replacement parts minimizes downtime during critical projects.
